Night owls beating early birds in lockdown

Our daily routines have changed

With many of us having spent more time at home than usual over the last 3 months, there have inevitably been changes in how we go about day to day life. Lockdown seems to have tipped the scales in favour of the night owls with more of us currently functioning better late at night than we do first thing in the morning.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? | eOpinion.orgOne eOpinion community member neatly summed up the shift to being a night owl:

“As I am currently working from home and don’t have to do my dreaded commute, I am staying up at night much later, and then enjoying 2 hours extra in bed in the morning.”

How many hours sleep | eOpinion.orgIrrespective of which camp we fall into, early bird or night owl, less than half of us are getting close to the recommended 8 hours of sleep a night, with just over a quarter surviving on less than 6 hours a night.

One eOpinion community member told us:

“There is not enough time in the day to fit in more than 6 hours unfortunately…too busy!”

Need coffee in the morning? | eOpinion.orgSurprisingly, only just over 50% of us currently need a strong coffee to get going in the morning, but maybe that has more to do with our favourite coffee shops having been shut than anything else.

Night owls might struggle as lockdown eases

It is going to be interesting to see how the night owls making the most of working from home and no commute cope as lockdown eases.

The survey was conducted on eOpinion.org with 2,017 people on 9, 10 and 11 June 2020 and is nationally representative.
